Freshman Orientation Survival Guide

welcome-freshmen1Not unlike ducklings following their mother, it’s once again that time of the year where packs of high school seniors can be spotted following the campus tour guide as they get a first look at where they’ll be spending the next four years of their life. While the scene may appear amusing, it’s natural for you incoming freshmen to be excited about absorbing the environment around you. The college experience will be something entirely different. So since It’s stressful enough deciding which college to commit to, here are a few tips to prevent you from stressing out at orientation as well.

1. Dress for success:

Depending on the college you attend there may or may not be a lot of walking. So leave those pretty sandals at home ladies. Opt for comfortable shoes that will carry you from campus to campus. Or whatever crazy place the tour guides decide to show you.

2. Ask questions:

College freshmen are expected to be young and naïve. Never again will you get the chance to get away with receiving answers to stupid questions. In all honestly it’s better to ask now than be unpleasantly surprised in the fall. That said, don’t be that kid who asks a million questions, instead do some research and decide what really matters to you. If you’re struggling here are a few suggested by USNews.

3. Speak up:

As Lucas Graham says “go make yourself some friends or you’ll be lonely”. Don’t be afraid to approach others and start a conversation. College puts you in contact with interesting people from a variety of backgrounds. Who knows, you may even meet your future roommate at orientation. I know I did.

4. Pack efficiently:

This is not move in day. Do not bring your entire closet and bedding. However, if you are attending an overnight orientation I do recommend shower slippers and a toothbrush cover because unfortunately communal bathrooms don’t usually render themselves to quality sanitation.

5. Save your money:

If a tour guide is leading the way, you will eventually find yourself at the school’s gift shop. Before dropping an unreasonable amount of money on spirit wear decide whether or not it’s worth it to spend so much on a logo. Let’s be honest a regular shirt could be 10 dollars, but a regular shirt with your school logo on it can suddenly sell for 30. Instead wait for the first week of school where school sponsored events will be giving out free swag and shirts.

6. Be doubtful:

Lastly remember to take all advice with a grain of salt. Most college tour guides are paid to essentially sell the school to you. They will show you all the amazing things the school has to offer, they will answer all your questions, and they will be convincing, but don’t let their charm sway you. Try to physically imagine yourself attending the school, and look at the situation objectively. Chances are you won’t be spending the night at the worst dorm or eating the worst food the college has to offer, but remember to choose wisely as vices exist at every college.
